How does Massachusetts License its Doctors of Optometry?
Once an optometrist has received his doctor of optometry degree (O.D.), in order to practice he must undergo a written examination from the National Board of Examiners in Optometry, administered by the Commonwealth's Board of Registration in Optometry. Upon passing this test the O.D. is then required to demonstrate his clinical competence on actual patients.
How does Optometry Maintain its High Professional Standards?
As part of their application for membership in the Massachusetts Society of Optometry, all doctors subscribe to a professional code of ethics. The doctors also pledge "to work individually and as a group to build for the profession a sound reputation for fidelity, professional ability and skill, recognizing that such a reputation is the most effective aid in increasing the field of public service."
The Commonwealth's Board of Registration in Optometry handles peer and consumer concerns in this area as they arise.
Today, these primary eye care providers are doing everything they can to maintain their high standards, while continuing to bring the most accessible and cost-effective, quality eye care to you and your families.
