Do optometrists treat Medicaid patients?
According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare, there are currently 473,000 Massachusetts residents who receive Medicaid benefits. Under the Medicaid program, 82% of those individuals will see an optometrist for their primary eye care. Since 74% of the optometrists in Massachusetts voluntarily participate in this program, eye care is made available to a portion of the population who might not otherwise receive it.
